“Schindler’s List” / 『シンドラーのリスト』 (1993)

Actually I couldn’t watch thoughout the entire three hours and I had a break in the middle of the film.
In my life before watching this, I think it was only some short documentary videos and Anne Frank’s diary, which I had read when I was an elementary school student, that made me understand Holocaust with vivid reality of someone’s experience.
Though there are many films which tell us the story and the fact of Holocaust,
it was my first time to watch one of them.

レイシズムに関する映画は、過去にも色々と見たことがある。
例えばこの前見た、アメリカの黒人奴隷の映画 ”Twelve Years A Slave” (邦題『それでも夜は明ける』)。
黒人であるからという理由で、白人たちに奴隷として扱われる。
もともとアメリカ国内で自分で生計を立て幸せに暮らしていた人物でさえも、
黒人であるからという理由で、突然連れ去られ、「今日からお前は奴隷だ」と言われ、
背中が爛れるほど鞭打たれながら、ひたすらに働かされる。
死にたくても、死ねない。

一方で、このホロコーストというのは…
まさに「死ね」という差別なんだと。
もちろんユダヤ人たちも、ドイツの行う戦争を有利にするための一翼として働かされ、ドイツ人の負担を少なくするために利用された。
その点は、先の黒人奴隷の置かれた状況と変わらない。
しかしドイツ軍は、 そうしてユダヤ人たちから自由と人間的な生活を奪うということに飽き足らず、
彼らを完全に「消す」という決断をするに至っていく。

Not to mention, Amon Göth, played by Ralph Fiennes, was something worse than an evil. He even looked like a person who’d already dead, like a ghost.
I couldn’t find anything alive in his voice and eyes.
I saw some Nazi warriors who showed kind of regretting faces looking back what they had done on some scenes, but Amon’s face and voice had never ever changed.
He may be a symbol of a person who truly dedicated and completely killed his own mind to Holocaust.

若い頃のレイフ・ファインズ（当時おそらく28〜29歳）が演じた、アーモン・ゲート強制収容所所長。彼の見るに耐えない行動を、この映画では見続けていなければいけないんだけれど..  彼の顔と声が、本当に印象的で。
なんというか、生きながらにしてこの人、実はもう死んでるんじゃないか..？って思えるような顔と声をしているんです。ずっと。
心のどこに乗っかって一つ一つの言葉を発しているのかわからない。
頭のどこに従って一つ一つの行動を取っているのかわからない。
他の人にはみんなあるはずの大事な何かが、この人の身体からはもう、いつの日かから完全に削除されてしまったんだろうと。
そんなふうに感じざるをえない演技でした。

When Spielberg got the Best Picture of the Academy Award in 1994, he said to the audience,

“I implore all the educators who are watching this program to please do not allow the Holocaust to remain a footnote in history.
Please teach this in your schools. There are 350,000 experts who just want to be useful with the remainder of their lives.
Please listen to the words and the echoes and the ghosts, and please teach this in your schools. ”

（「この作品を見てくれた全ての教育者の皆さんにお願いです。どうか、ホロコーストを歴史の紙切れの一つのままで置いておかないでください。
これを是非、あなたの学校で教えてください。自らの経験の生き証として、ただ皆の役に立ちたいと思っている35万人のエキスパート*たちがいます。
どうか彼らの言葉に、そしてすでに亡くなった人たちの声にも、耳を傾けてください。そしてこれを学校で教えてください。」）
*35万人のエキスパート…ホロコーストの生存者とその子孫たちのこと。

こうした映画を「見なさい」と言ってくれる親がいて、自分は本当に幸せ者だと思う。
史実に関する人々の記憶が宿る映画をみると、
この記憶を次の世代に受け継ぐのは自分自身なんだなと感じる。
それを私に見るように声をかけてくれたのが、母親であるだけに。
私たちが覚えていなければ、次の世代はもう見ないかもしれないんだから。

I am so lucky that I have a parent who tells me to watch such films.
It was my mother who told me to watch it.
I find myself responsible to keep and save such films for another younger generation, the films which represent actual people’s memories in the past and might be forgotten unless our generation remember them.
